Where’s the best place to eat in town?

Depends who you ask, of course, but if you turn to review site, its thousands of users have plenty of opinions.

Yelp crunched its data on businesses in Fresno and Clovis in the restaurant and food category to determine the top 50 places to eat. It considered users’ star ratings and factored in the volume of reviews, all of it between Jan. 1, 2021 and Dec. 31, 2021 for locations that were open as of mid January.

You can read more about how and why Yelp did this at its blog post.

The result is a who’s who of local restaurants, almost all family owned and operated. It reflects Fresno’s diversity, with restaurants serving Mexican, Middle Eastern, Italian, Asian, even Peruvian cuisine.

The No. 1 winner was homegrown favorite, Ampersand Ice Cream, known for its top-selling honeycomb ice cream.

The locally-owned ice cream shop opened its first location on Echo Avenue the Tower District in 2015. It now has another location at Herndon and Marks avenues and a third is on the way for Clovis, with owners Jeff and Amelia Bennett shooting for a May opening.

To celebrate its No. 1 spot, Yelp is hosting an event at the Echo Avenue Ampersand, from 4 pm to 7 pm, Thursday, Feb. 17. They’ll give away 100 scoops of ice cream to people on the guest list who RSVP via its website.

Another interesting tidbit about the list of the top 50 best places to eat? How many newbies are on the list.

The Bee told you about Bab Al-Yemen Cafe, the Yemeni coffee shop that opened last fall. Mayd Modern Mediterranean won The Bee’s poll about the best new restaurant of 2021. The Magic Lamp, The Meat Up, Halaly Tacos and Chuck’s BBQ are also relative newcomers.

Of course, longtime Fresno favorites landed on the list, like Sam’s Italian Deli, The Lime Lite, The Annex Kitchen and Sabor Cocina Latina & Bar and Jus’ Jo’s Country Kitchen.
